The Tour :

A number of places of Sri Lanka involving Hindu deity Rama’s struggle to rescue his beloved Sita from Ravana the king of Lanka are mentioned in the ancient Indian epic poem Ramayana. 07 of these places are explored in this itinerary along with a number of other key sights of the region at a sedate pace.

Day 01

Transfer to the hotel in Colombo. In the afternoon set out on a city tour of Colombo. Visit the vividly colorful Gangarama Temple crammed with artefacts and the impressive all-granite Sri Ponnambalawaneswaram Shivan temple.

Day 02

Depart for Kandy city. Take an informative brief guided walk in a spice garden on the way in Mawanella. Here you can pick a lesson on how to prepare local dishes using tropical spices too. On reaching Kandy, set out on a city tour. Visit the panoramic Upper-lake Drive and drive around the man-made Kandy Lake. Leave some time to browse through fabulous gift stores before checking in to the hotel. In the evening enjoy a cultural show, followed by a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

Day 03

Sit back and enjoy spectacular views of endless lush tea fields as we drive this morning to Nuwara Eliya the hill country resort located at 1800 m above sea level. On the way, visit the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple in Ramboda. It is believed Lord Hanuman roamed in these hills in search of Sitadevi. Pull-over a little further again to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Ramboda Falls and to visit a tea factory. Factory fresh tea can be purchased at the factory outlet. Spend the second half of the day at leisure in Nuwara Eliya, exploring the city on your own.

Day 04

Embark on a city tour of Nuwara Eliya: drive around the man-made Gregory Lake, visit the colonial Hill Club and the beautiful and historic 18-hole golf course. Spend the day leisurely.

Day 05

This morning visit the Sita Amman kovil in Sita Eliya. This area along with where the Hakgala Botanical Gardens is now located in, once formed Ashok Vatika, the legendary pleasure gardens where Sitadevi is said to have been kept captive by king Ravana. The stream that flows by the shrine is believed to be where Sitadevi bathed and the cavities on the rock here are said to be the footmarks of Lord Hanuman that were formed when he jumped off a tree. Take a relaxed walk in the Hakgala Botanical Gardens followed by a visit to Divurumpola, where Sitadevi is believed to have performed Agni Pariksha to prove her chastity to Lord Rama. Transfer to your accommodation in the picturesque Ella town.

Day 06

Take a delightful morning hike up to the famous nine-arch bridge in Demodara. Move on to visit the Lipton’s Seat in Haputale, a vantage point high up in a tea plantation from where the tea mogul Sir Thomas Lipton had used to survey his vast estates. Later on take a detour to view the Diyaluma Falls in Koslanda, considered the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Complete the day by spending a blissful moment at the Ravana Falls in Ella. Return to the hotel.

Day 07

This morning hop aboard a scenic train bound for Nanu Oya, which offers sweeping views of tea plantations, waterfalls, reservoirs and a countless number of tunnels. From there onwards be transferred by road to the  beach-front hotel in Negombo which is just a 20 minutes journey from the airport.

Day 08

Drive to Munneswaram Kovil in Chilaw, where Lord Shiva is believed to have come to Lord Rama’s aid to deliver from Brahmahathi Dosham – curse for slaying a brahmin, king Ravana being a brahmin. Presently Munneswaram is mainly associated with Kali Ma. Later on visit the Manavari Ramalingam Sivan Temple in Bangadeniya. In fulfilling a vow made to Lord Shiva, Lord Rama is believed to have installed a gold lingam in this shrine, which exists to this date. After performing your veneration rituals, be transferred back to the airport for flight.
