Visit a turtle hatchery on the beach strip of Kosgoda, where turtle eggs collected from fishermen are incubated over a period of time before setting free to the ocean.
Sight : Boat safari on Madu River
Embark on thrilling boat safari on Madu River, the second largest swamp in the island. The river falls into the ocean at Balapitiya, a tranquil fishing village on the southern beach strip. The little-over an hour-long boat ride runs through a fascinating shady mangrove forest. During the tour you would get to visit a Buddhist monastery on an island as well as an island where cinnamon is being peeled and oil is made by the inhabitants. This RAMSAR-preserved wetland is a bird paradise too and is home to monitor lizards, crocodiles and monkeys.
Sight : Dutch Fort of Galle
Explore the magnificent Dutch Fort of Galle, one of the best preserved colonial sea forts in Asia. Take a stroll down its cobbled narrow streets and along ramparts upto the lighthouse. The streets and alleys here ooze charm. The National Maritime Museum, which occupies a 17th century Dutch warehouse, showcases an interesting collection of marine artifacts discovered during underwater expeditions in shipwrecks along the southern coast. Among other historic landmarks within the fort is the reputedly oldest breadfruit tree in the island.
