Itinerary
Day 01
Depart for your accommodation in rural Tissamaharama town, located in the deep-south of the island. We shall take the southern express highway to save time.
In the afternoon set out on a thrilling jeep safari in the Yala National Park. Spotted deer, wild boar, wild buffalo, mugger crocodiles, macaques and elephants are commonly spotted here, but sloth bear sightings are rare. So are leopards, contrary to the fact that Yala is known to house the largest leopard population in the world.
Accommodation : Kithala Resort in Tissamaharama
Day 02
Start your day with a visit to the magnificent mulkirigala rock monastery, which comprises a number of fascinating cave temples located at different heights of an imposing 210m high boulder. Don’t miss out on the famous historical cavity in one wall, said to be inhabited by a cobra without ever causing harm to pilgrims. Following this cultural ascent, you will explore the magnificent Dutch Fort of Galle, known as the best-preserved colonial sea fort in Asia. Take a leisurely walk down its cobbled narrow streets and along the ramparts up to the lighthouse, and visit the Maritime Museum. Among the historic landmarks within is the reputedly oldest breadfruit tree on the island. After exploring this UNESCO site, you will be transferred back to your drop-off point, concluding your tour of the mulkirigala rock monastery and the deep south.
